A tapered empire shade in cotton poplin, pleated by hand into one-centimetre knife pleats and lined in cream. The pleats throw the light downwards and give it a warmer, more old-fashioned quality than the linen drum does; it is the shade for a reading lamp. Three sizes by bottom diameter, with the top a little over half of it.
The pleats collect dust and the only way to clean them is with a soft brush, pleat by pleat. The ink version is lined so the light stays warm, but it does make the room darker than the ivory. Use a bulb of 40 W equivalent or less.
