The wool protector is the piece people buy second, after a wool duvet has convinced them. A 300 g/m² layer of wool under the sheet draws moisture down and away from you, which is why a bed with one feels drier in summer and less cold to get into in winter. It also softens a firm mattress slightly, somewhere between a protector and a thin topper.
It cannot be washed as often as the cotton protector - a wool cycle a few times a year is the limit before the batting starts to felt - so if you want something to launder weekly, buy the cotton one. Wool does not need it; it is naturally resistant to dust mites and does not hold smell.
