A pillow protector is the cheapest thing on this site and the one we would least like you to skip. It sits between the pillow and the pillowcase, zipped shut, and takes the skin oil and sweat that otherwise soak into the fill and turn a down pillow yellow and heavy in two years. Wash it with the sheets and the pillow underneath stays clean for five.
It is a plain percale case, not a membrane: it is not waterproof and it does not change the feel of the pillow. Sold in twos, in all three pillow sizes.
